Common questions about veneers
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Well-made porcelain veneers commonly last 10 to 15 years, and often longer. What shortens that is usually not the porcelain itself but the conditions around it — an uneven bite, night-time grinding, or gum disease. We assess all three before recommending veneers, because a veneer bonded onto an unstable foundation is a short-term result.
Do veneers ruin your natural teeth?
A thin layer of enamel is normally reshaped so the veneer sits flush rather than bulking out the tooth. That change is permanent, which is why we stay as conservative as each case allows and, where the teeth suit it, use minimal-preparation designs. You will see exactly what your own case requires before you commit to anything.
How many appointments do veneers take?
Most cases run over two to three visits: a smile design and preparation appointment, then fitting once your ceramics come back from the lab. Where the change is significant, we add a trial mock-up so you can live with the shape and approve it before the final veneers are made.
Should I get veneers or Invisalign?
It depends on what is actually wrong. If your teeth are healthy but sit crooked or crowded, Invisalign moves them into position without altering the teeth at all. If the problem is shape, shade or proportion, veneers redesign them. Some smiles are best served by aligning first and refining afterwards — we will tell you honestly which category you fall into, including when the answer is that you do not need veneers.
Are veneers painful?
Preparation is done under local anaesthetic, so the appointment itself should not hurt. Some mild sensitivity to hot and cold in the days between preparation and fitting is normal and settles once the final veneers are bonded.
